Mia explained it perfectly when she said New Year’s to Thais is like what Christmas is to us Westerners. It’s the time when we go back home, sometimes making the long journey overseas, to be reunited with family and/or friends. It’s a special time fraught with shopping, eating, and socializing.

Although something you might have already noticed is when there is any major Thai holiday, many Thais return to their hometown. Thus making planning very important if you plan to travel around these times. Train tickets and buses are usually booked. I wouldn’t be surprised if planes are also filling up faster these days too. This is the reason why Bangkok sometimes looks empty.

But I’ve never celebrated the New Year in Bangkok or กรุงเทพ /  grung tâyp. Chiang Mai is music, khom loys, street food, traffic jams and fireworks over the city at various locations like ประตูท่าแพ / pbà-dtuu tâa phae/Thae Phae Gate. For a calendar of events in Chiang Mai go here: Also keep in mind, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are public holidays in Thailand.

Saying Happy New Year in paa-săa Thai is quite easy. Just remember to put together hello, sà-wàt-dee/ year, bpee/ and new, mài. Notice mài is low tone. I remember last year when I told everyone this, Thais were so happy and their faces lit up like a Christmas tree.

This year I will wish my friends and neighborhood folks,

Happy new year
