That makes “noodle” and “school” sound like “nooden” and “schoon” until we get used to the sounds.
I freely confess that we don’t have the rigid distinctions between R and L that the English do.  Fact is, we prefer not to be rigid about most things.  We can say the letters, but we’re comfortable being a little casual about them.  Every Thai can say the important word “อะไร/ à-rai” (something, what, etc) with a beautifully trilled ร/R, but when we’re talking fast and need a repeat, we’ll say อะไรนะ/à-rai ná (huh?,what was that ?) and to a foreigner it will sound a lot like อะไลนะ/à-lai ná.  It’s not because we can’t say the ร/R – we’re just comfortable and flexible.
This can lead to some สนุก/sà-nùk/fun.  Ask any Thai person you know to say “library” and see if you can hear the different between “ R” and “L”.

It’s took me years to say it correctly but if I say it without thinking, I will still make the mistakes “ liblaly” lol
There’s a new stationery store sign in my town of Chiang Mai that’s getting some double takes. It says, in big letters, ล้านเครื่องเขียน/ láan krêung kǐan.  To a Thai who isn’t listening carefully will sound just like ร้านเครื่องเขียน/ráan krêung kǎan.

ร้าน/ráan means store.  เครื่อง/krêung are instruments or supplies, and เขียน/kǐan is writing, which all leads to a very ordinary name for a stationery supply house.  But /ล้าน/láan (which in casual speech sounds a lot like ráan ) means a million.  So the store’s been cleverly named A Million Writing Supplies. Most Thais won’t catch it until they look at the sign and notice the spelling. It took me a few second to figure it out and took a snap shot.

Let’s me sum it up for you,
ร้านเครื่องเขียน /ráan krêung kǎan/a stationery supply house.
ล้านเครื่องเขียน/ láan krêung kǐan/A Million Writing Supplies.
Make sense?!  pretty cleaver, isn’t it?

On 29 July 1962 at the Faculty of Arts, During the discussion, His Majesty urged everybody, to be aware of the proper use of the Thai language.

The king speech

“เรามีโชคดีที่มีภาษาของตนเองแต่โบราณกาล จึงสมควรอย่างยิ่งที่จะรักษาไว้ ปัญหาเฉพาะในด้านรักษาภาษานี้ก็มีหลายประการ อย่างหนึ่งต้องรักษาให้บริสุทธิ์ในทางออกเสียง คือ ให้ออกเสียงให้ถูกต้องชัดเจน อีกอย่างหนึ่งต้องรักษาให้บริสุทธิ์ในวิธีใช้ หมายความว่า วิธีใช้คำมาประกอบประโยค นับเป็นปัญหาที่สำคัญ ปัญหาที่สาม คือ ความร่ำรวยในคำของภาษาไทย ซึ่งพวกเรานึกว่าไม่ร่ำรวยพอ จึงต้องมีการบัญญัติศัพท์ใหม่มาใช้…สำหรับคำใหม่ที่ตั้งขึ้นมีความจำเป็นในทางวิชาการไม่น้อย แต่บางคำที่ง่ายๆก็ควรจะมี ควรจะใช้คำเก่าๆที่เรามีอยู่แล้ว ไม่ควรจะมาตั้งศัพท์ใหม่ให้ยุ่งยาก”

Translation

“We are fortunate that we have had our own unique language since ancient times. It should therefore be carefully preserved.  This can be accomplished in several ways.  The purity of pronunciation should be maintained with great accuracy.  Words should be used appropriately in sentences. The key issue is the richness of the Thai language.  We should not think that the Thai language is somehow inadequate and that we frequently need to create new words.  Although some new words may be necessary for technical or academic usage, most words should remain simple.  We should use the words that already exist and not add complications by creating new words.”

To recognize His Majesty’s concern for the proper use of the Thai language, National Thai Language Day has been observed since 1999.

When it’s come to Thai grammar and Thai way of like thing are quite not the same.

Like, in Thai greeting “wâi” some might think “I know how to wai , you put your hands together” Well, partly true but not that easy.

 This is not new..we all know what it is, right?

Well yeah, It’s a special day to appreciate teachers, to honor them for their hard work and contributions to society.

Today I have a strange feeling, why?

First, I know what today is but usually every year I will be thinking about all my beloved and favorite teachers.I would call or go to visit them if possible.

This year, I’ve got one more dearest teacher…kruu Patcharii Sripaiwan

Second, I got a few emails from my students, they wish me on this important day and thank for the time and knowledge in helping them to learn Thai. Yep!!!

This is why it’s strange…being a teacher of someone make me feel more thankful to all my teachers. Especially, all my Thai teachers.

It’s not only giving OUT the appreciation anymore….today is also my day…the day to RECEIVE the appreciation as well.

Hey!! I’m a proud teacher

I got ask several times about what is the different between ครู/kruu and อาจารย์ /ar-jaan in Thai.

They both mean a teacher, you got it right!

My answer has also been short and simple

Kruu Mia said:

“In Thai ครู/kruu is a teacher in kindergarten to high school level.”

“อาจารย์ /ar-jaan is a teacher in collage or University level.”

 The dictionary said:

ครู/kruu :a teacher, a master, a preceptor, a tutor, an instructor, a coach

อาจารย์ /ar-jaan : a teacher, a master, a university lecturer, a college fellow, a member of a university faculty

Seems similar, dont you think?

The truth is, these 2 words has a huge different meaning in Thai people hearts.

Let’s me explain to you in details, same same but different

The origin of the word ครู/kruu came from Pali “ครุ” or Sanskrit “ คุรุ”

means heavy (in duty or responsibility)

When Thais think about ครู/kruu we think about a person who taught us since we were little.

Not only teach us the subject of his/her expertise but ครู/kruu is also look after and teach us good moral and discipline.

We respect them and honor them as a second parent.

There is a Thai saying

ครูคือพ่อแม่คนที่สองของศิษย์

kruu keu pŏr mâe kon tîi sông kŏng sìt

Teacher is a second parent of students.

I love to be called kruu Mia…it’s warmed my heart and make me realize the purpose of each day.

Thai Ghosts and Spirits
ผีไทยและวิญญาณ
pǐi means ghost
win yaan means spirit
Thai attitude to spirits is quite similar to Thai attitude to human being.Some to be trusted and respected and some can’t be trusted and must be feared.
Growing up with with a big brother who often tease me with a haunted bedtime stories and alot to see about ghost on the TV, I admit my fear of ผี pǐi to all of you.
It is one of many tricks adult use to control children.
On a scale of 0-10, 0 being no fear of ghost,
From the age of 2-10 I was at scale 7
Right now, I’m moving down to 5
That being said, let me introduce to my childhood fear.
1.แม่นาคพระโขนง
mâe naâk / the ghost name
phrá ká nhǒng/ a district in Bangkok
Impress your Thai friends with her name if you pronounce its correctly 100% of Thai would be stunned.
The story has been told and retold for several decades.mâe naâk and her unborn child died during delivery while her husband mâak was away for military service.
