Maanii and Me
Hi I’m Mia,
Welcome to the Maanii series for reading Thai. I’d like to explain why I have a special passion for these books. Let me start with a little story.
Two weeks ago I went to Hua Hin for a holiday with my husband. We went for a stroll along the beach on a beautiful warm night. As we walked in the moonlight, waves lapping at our feet, I spotted some garbage left in the sand by picnickers. I interrupted our peaceful walk to go over, pick-up the refuse, and deposit it in the nearest trash can.
Then I returned to continue my romantic walk with my husband.
As I walked I wondered….what compelled me to do that?
Thank you very much for this, I absolutely love it. I’m currently learning to read proper Thai and I definitely think this will help me a lot
@Joey : Maamee books is definitely best for learning Thai, appreciate your support
I am so happy to find your website. I love the idea of learning more Thai with Maanee. My husband is Thai and he loved these books, too! We really like the proverbs you added to your website, as well. Thanks for all your hard work!!! I hope you are able to put up the rest of the books.
@Merri, Welcome to Maanee fan club
glad to know that you an your hubby also like Maanee books. The proverbs are still under editing if you find any error please let me know.I’m working book 4 and see how it’s goes with feedbacks. Your vote has been counted
I lived in Thailand 3 years ago back in the 90′s where I took all the Thai classes offered back then. I learned to speak Thai fairly well, but have always struggled with reading, writing, and pronunciation. I am getting ready to return to thailand for a vacation and heard about your website from a friend. Wow! I am learning so much and so quickly with Maanee! Thank you so much for your website and hard work. Where can i purchase hard copies of this book?
Hi Kathy, Thank you for visiting Maanee page..your comment is truly make my day and keep me going forward. I’m glad you are learning well with Maanee books. Publishing Maanee books online is requiring a lot of work but I’m willing to push forward..book 12(last one) is my objective. I might miss out a lot of details if you see any error please let me know.
Hard copies of the books? all 12 books? they all have became an antique collection (very pricy!!!) and the Thai Ministry of education certainly has no interest in printing more.
The PDFs of all 12 books is online to download for free
http://womenlearnthai.com/index.php/download-12-free-manee-books/
If you are very serious in getting a hard copies…I can give you more information..I’m on the hunt for it as well
Thanks for taking the time to make these Thai children’s classics more accessible to a new generation of Thai language learners. I also appreciate your willingness to follow Kruu Sripaiwan’s advice to “Do the right thing and do it well” with respect to the Thai Ministry of Education. I’m looking forward to working my way through all 12 volumes of this series.
Yedian, Thank you for stopping by, Kruu Sripaiwan have giving me the courage to push it through.
Now book 1-4 is published all at once but for the following books I will publish 1 lesson at a time…so, please subscribe to my newsletter to be updated at all time.Keep on learning
Wow, great to be reunited with the Maanee Books.
Thanks for the huge effort you’ve put in, to make this available online, Mia. Much appreciated.
Emil: Thank you for your support!! we’ve got to finish book 1 in your class..hopefully you will keep on reading. Keep on going, Emil
It really is a great idea to continue translating (and speaking) book three and further of the Maanee series. So far I only knew about the first two books. I just discovered that there even are twelve Maanee books!
I know from experience how much time the building of a website costs. So thank you very much for your work.
Rene : Thank you for visiting Maaeee page, Maanee project is a tremendous work indeed. Cost?! dont mention it lol
It’s a labor of love for Maanee. Yes, there are 12 books of Maanee’s series please subscribe for news letter because from book 5 on I will publish 1 lesson at a time.
Hi,
Good work!
Have you considered collating the text into one download and the audio into one mp3? I would like to read it on my kindle!
I have the PDFs, but it would display much better in plain text. And it would be nice to listen along to the audio at the same time.
Hi Collin..great idea! I adding up your request on my “to do” list right now..thanks and stay-tuned
I come back once more, after having studied several lessons now. This is a great site. I am doing book 3 now
because in the past I did (on a different site) books 1 and 2. My remark:
I believe that it would be very helpful, for those who are no longer absolute beginners, to be able to listen to a sound file where the whole lesson is read at normal (or almost nomal) Thai reading speed. Thanks.
Rene, welcome back…the reading in normal speech will be up soon..stay-tunes, thanks!!
Hi Mia,
I really love your story connection with the Maanii books. I’ve started the lessons and I look forward to it! Thanks
for recommending it!
Lani, kob kun ka lani, I’m glad to hear that you like Maanii as well.
thanks you very much.
i am very interesting in thailand ,smile land.
traditional cultures also very interesting.
i want to learn melody of thai language.
i find this maanii,,
i want to try to learning language from maanii.
thanks you very much.

Hi Mia
Thank you for all your hard work on making Manee ‘user friendly’ for us internet users. It is so much better for us to concentrate on the language-learning rather than the logistics of rekeying words from the books to get them into a dictionary.
thanks again, it is very much appreciated.
Hi BobSter,
Thank you for your feedback, I understand what you mean with the transliteration.I’m agree with you.
Mia,
This is a great resource for learning to read Thai and the presentation is excellent. Thanks very much for sharing it. A question: Do you plan to post the other books in the Manii series? It would make a perfect course.
Mat
Mat, it’s always great to receive a feedback on Maanii books project. In the beginning, I’m planning to publish more Maanii books but right now I’m waiting to be sure if there are enough users since the next books are more and more difficult and long. I’m sure I have your vote, right!
You have my vote too for book 5 (and further), although I am only halfway book 4 now! I enjoy your versions of Manee with translations very much, as I probably said before already.
My tempo is a bit slowing down now, because we are just back from Thailand and of course our next trip is not very soon. But I think I will finish book 4 in January.
BTW I also enjoy your Facebook entries!
Thank you for your support since the beginning, your encouragement will certainly keep me forward
Thanks Mia,
I think there’s something wrong with me…I believe I’m too old to be enjoying these books as much as I do! They are a GREAT tool and the stories are interesting!
Thanks!
Rob, take it easy…try to learn what you think it’s useful. I’m sure there are many things to learn from (if you are not keen for the children story)..thank you for stopping by
Lovely books to learn from. I’m on book 4, do a lesson every two days. A great resource and fun. One tiny critique in what should be a barrage of praise, occasionally the translation is a bit loose, to the point where one cant work out the literal meaning . But wonderful to have the books – which many of my Thai friends remember nostalgically. Please put 5 and 6 on. Kopkhun maak.
kob kun ka khun Bruce to find my resources worthwhile. I acknowledge the imperfection of the translation and plan to improve it soon. Book 5 is under production..stay-tuned.
The Manee books are such an excellent way to learn Thai; thank you so much for all the hard work, Mia!
@Christian, thank you for the comment, I glad there are more and more Thai language learners find Maanii books worthwhile…keep learning!!!
This project is simply amazing! I’ve just started learning to read Thai and these books with your translation are better than any modern textbooks! Thank you sooooo much!!!
sa wat dii ka Julia, I’m delighted to know that you find Maanii books worthwhile..keep reading and more contents are on the way!!
Hi Mia.
Very good job. Unfortunately Maanii books do not work good on my ipad.
Thank you
Hi Davide, stay-tuned..it’s on my “to do list”
Thank you very much for your great effort in publishing the Maanii books and teaching us foreigners Thai language and culture.
I started Maanii on http://www.seasite.niu.edu but went searching for a better sound quality and found it here.
I would also appreciate an easily downloadable version for the sound files, the Maanii text, your translation and the word lists. For me I think I’d also most like a text file instead of PDF version. I try to study when in the train to work using an mp3 player and the text on paper.
I also found a small mistake in your Thai reading.
Lesson 23, the normal speed file, lesson-23.m4a.
At the beginning only: it’s “Maana and Piti”, not “Maana and Maanii”.
The slow spoken text is correct.
I also like you Thai proverbs very much. Explanation is very clear, almost too much but better to err on the clear side.
One web site to add to your links: http://www.thai-language.com, a very good Thai dictionary, I’ve been using it for over a decade. Only problem is that it sometimes gives too many hits for a word because it also gives many examples using that word.
Dave, thank you for your suggestion..I will put them on my to-do lists. Please subscribe to my site or keep checking back for more updated.
Hi Mia,
Do you have any idea when book 5 will start appearing here? I am nearly finished with book 4. I appreciate your efforts greatly!
Hi Rene,
Glad to hear from you! the contents of book 5 is ready but I will publish it weekly on a new platform which nearly finish. The new platform will save a lot of my time upload the contents, stay-tuned !!
You would think that the Thai Ministry for Education or the Thai Ministry for Culture would have an interest in archiving and making resources like these books available, perhaps digitally at least.
I agree with you !
Thailand is a developing country.
Unfortunately, when developing something we seems to focus on building a new invention rather than improving what we already have, (I think!)
Thank you so much for this, i am sure this will help me a lot
Thank you so much for your hard work. This is a wonderful resource and very nicely done. It helped me a lot when I was trying to learn Thai for a trip.
sa wat dii ka Karen,
Thank you so much for the donation and I’m delighted to hear that Maanii books are useful to you. If you have any question or suggestion please feel free to let me know.
Well, M a bite late to be your member, but I still lucky as well to get in this website. I do love all the structure you have set. Anyway, I have a doubt related to learning by Skype I mean how can I contact you directly?
Thank for accept me as your student.

GREAT JOB MANY THANKS
Thank you very much for your effort. I used to love reading these books when I was young too. I’m a Thai mother with 2 children. We are in Cambridge, UK. I start teaching my children to read Thai by myself. Without any materials in hand I need all I can find from the internet. Your site is very useful and easy to read. Thank you again for your kindness and I will suggest my Farang friends about your site.

Hi Khru Mia.
The next few month I have a lot of time to learn to read, to write and probably to speak Thai. Sometimes I use your Anki-Web and found the following phrase. Is it possible that you made a typing error at your site on Anki? Please check the following sentence.
รักซี ลุงก็คงรักฉันมาก
Of course I love uncle and he loves me a lot too.
ซี see– n. E. sea
สิ si\ adv. Certainly part. (at the end of a sentence to emphasize)
ซิ si/ adv. Imperatively part. (used an intensive to modify a verb in the imperative mood)
Hi Mia,
I discovered the Maanii books a few months ago online but now I have found and joined your site so I have translations and audio as well! While I have been studying Thai for a few years now I am looking forward to starting from book one. I loved your interview with the author of the books – what a lovely lady.
Thanks again,
Charlie.
Please enjoy all the Maanii books, teacher Ratchanii is indeed a lovely lady.
I would like to enroll for your online class on maanee and manee. Pls let me know how much I have to pay every month and for how long.
I have downloaded the 12 books online but couldn’t find any where online where there is English translation and audio in thai.
Pls advise. Thank you!
I’ve answered to your inquiry via email.
Hello Ms Mia. Thank you! I already subscribed for it. Thank you for
helping us foreigners to want to learn the Fabulous Thai language and it’s
wonderful culture. You have done it so well. I hope the
people of Thailand and the government recognize your great effort not just
for making us from outside of Thailand wanting to know the Thai language and culture but for the Thai tourism industry as a whole. Great job!
Hi Ng Choon Meng,
Thank you for much for your appreciation.
Hi,
Do they still sell Maanii books in the market?
My name is Voeun. What will my nickname be like? need help
Hi Voeun,
Maanii books have became an antique books. It’s very hard to find and buy these days.
Your Thai nickname could be just VO.
You can now buy the new version at some bookstores like ศึกษาภัณฑ์ (suksapan panit) in Thailand.
In the new version each book contains two books. So there are only half the books in total but the same number of chapters.
But as of right now you can only buy 4 out of 6 since the other two are apparently still in production. At least so I was told at the bookstore.
Hey Mia,
I find these books nice to read as they present simple vocab. Also it helps one to get used to the syntax of the Thai language which is great. I can read and write Thai but the rules which govern Thai grammar can be confusing at times.
One question, how would you coach someone when it comes to pronouncing ต and ป? They are similar to ด and บ but said it a different way. Do Thai people make a clear distinction between them or can you get away with saying them the same?
Thanks Mia
Ashley
Mia – where on your website do I find the english translation for the Maanii books. Without the translation the books are of little value as a learning tool.
Book 1-2 : the translation is under each sentence.
Book 3-5 : The translation is on the bottom of each lesson.
Hope this help, please let me know if you have any question.
Enjoy learning !
Mia
Hi Mia, the books look very nice. Do you know where to buy the paper version?

hi i’m a new student hello pretty teacher
Welcome Udom!
when i download your book to my computer it doesn’t has translate in english
Hi Udom,
The only to get the English translation is to copy and paste.
One lucky day, finally I found a good book to start learning clearly about Thai language and culture. I stayed in Thai for 4 years, has left for almost 4 years. But I truly love Thai people and culture, buddism -oriented. I used to manage finding places and books to study Thai several times, but failed. Hope that this time it works, reading all comments above gives me BELIEF. Thank you so much
Hi Hung Viet,
I’m glad you like Maanii books and hope it will help you to learn Thai. Let me know if you have any question.
Enjoy learning

Hello, do you know the name and location where I can find the books students are using in 2013-2014? Id like to compare the the new textbooks with these old ones.
You can go to any big bookstore in a big city and ask for
หนังสือเรียนตามหลักสูตร/ năng-sĕu rian dtaam làk sòot/ text books
Good luck!
Mia
HI, is there a Thai phrase equivalent the the English “On and off” (intermittently), as in
” I Have been trying to learn Thai on-and-off for 10 years now” ?
I think I may have cracked it now. Good old Manee or is it Manii?
Hi,
Good one!! we don’t say the exact the same as “on and off”, it depends on the context.
To answer your question, “learn Thai on-and-off”
rian bâng mâi rian bâng/ study some not study some.
verb+bâng, mâi+verb bâng
OR rian rian yòod yòod/ study study stop stop
Maanee or Manii is a transliteration, either one is ok to use.
Hello Mia, thanks a lot for Manee books. It’s great to learn reading thai.
I noticed that sounds doesn’t work in the lessons !
Is it normal or it’s my computer ?!
Thanks !
Hi,
Try to change internet browser, it work wonders!!!
Thank you for reading Maanii books
Mia
Hi, Teacher Mia.
I am so happy that you accepted me to learn Thai with you.
I will to try learn and follow with your advice.
Thank you,
Vitou.
Hello again Mia, This is just to say that your Maanee books are helping me with my Thai hand-writing and typing. I use the audio clips to practice dictation. I have to do it line by line as I can’t work out how to pause the full chapter audio, but that’s no hardship.
I like the way new words are repeated several times on the next few following lines.
I think the language used is a bit out-dated in this text-speak modern world, but I feel that people of my vintage prefer the old ways.
Poo Yai Lee.
Hello Teacher Mia,
I first got into this website when I saw the interview of a businessman who speaks well in Thai in youtube were he reads the books of Manii in as short as 2 years and 3 months! Though, I really believe you need an ample amount of time and put to heart on learning the language, I was really impressed and hoped I can learn as much as well. I have bookmarked this website and will continue to learn Thai language. Thank you very much !!! Su Su!
Can you please give me the latest link for downloading the 12 Manee books? Everything I have clicked on to date does not seem to work. Really appreciate your help.
Thank you for this labor of love! I am growing more confident day by day in my reading.
Your voice is very lyrical and delightful, and makes reading a joy. Much appreciation for your hard work–this is by far the best reading resource I have found.
Could you add audio to the individual vocabulary words to master them?
thank you for posting the manee textbooks!!
they are so helpful and i am learning so much from them.
Hi all friends and the author,
I find these books really helpful for me because I have started to learn Thai language. I like this language very much. Enjoy learning it everyone.
Thanks so much. Having these books on line has been a huge help!
Does anyone know if the rest of the Manee Mana books exist in a word file, or any other type of file where the Thai text can be “cut and pasted” into an online translator?
Thanks again!!
this is a great resource, i’ve already learned so much from the first book alone, my pronunciation has improved massively, lots of hard work ahead and onto the 2nd book
Lovely introductory video and I hope that the books I just downloaded 2 minutes ago will reignite the spark I had for learning to read and write Thai. Thanks for this resource.
Hello,
I’m trying to find the Maanii Maana translation and records. Can u please point me to the right direction?
Thanks
Some years ago there is a free website for learning with Manee. What can farang doo only with the pdf books
Hey Maanii,
As someone who is starting out, do you think it’s easier to learn to read Thai or speak?
I want to learn myself at home but I’m not sure how I should start, any tips?
Thanks and great site.
Harvie recently posted.. Broke In Thailand Living On $300 Per Month
Harvie – check the reply I posted for you on the site. I didn’t see this reply box.
Learn to read and write in Thai. I spent years trying to learn words, phrases, etc., but frankly – in one ear and out the other. Without living in Thailand or having a Thai speaker to talk with the process was disappointing. Tone deaf, memory loss, weak brain – who knows, but remembering volcabulary and repeating endless lines of single thoughts in Thai was just not working. Sure I learned a bit and Thai friends would complement me but I was hopeless once they opened their mouths. I tried a year-ago to learn the alphabet – consonants, vowels – about one month or so, did very well, but work got in the way and I failed keeping up the daily drills. After returning from Thailand this year I decided to focus on learning to read and write. It’s been my most rewarding journey in the language. I still can not “read” as in English – like this paragraph without first translating it into phonetic-english. But I can write it phonetically and get the pronunciation mostly correct. Learning to write implies you learn to speak because in order to write phonetically you must interpret Thai sounds correctly. You’ll do that once you begin learning the Thai alphabet. You’ll learn Thai consonants are spoken differently depending on whether in an initial or final position. For example: ก- gaaw gai, makes a “G” sound when it begins a word or a hard “K” sound if at the end of a word. Learning Thai vowels forces you to speak words in Thai correctly. Same with tone marks. Once you get started and have some of this down use Maanee books to practice. Turn off the translations. Do the translations yourself, then hit the audio to see how close you came to the sentance. Then turn them back on to see the correct translation. Bare in mind that Thai is written in english in many different ways depending on the author. Mia follows Thai2English, I prefer ThaiPod101. Other authors do such a botch-up job its hard to speak their version. Germans come close to several important Thai sounds but ThaiPod101 does a very good job. I mix and match spellings from time to time. Bare in mind how we write a Thai word in english becomes irrelevant over time because what is most important is being able to speak the word and be understood. Mia’s done a fabulous job with the books. They contain a large useful volcabulary you will learn over time. By reading and translating you’ll put many of those words to work because they are repeated as the stories develop. I won’t be needing words like – horseback riding, but now I know them and will not forget them. I hope this helps.

Dear Mia
Thank you very much for your advice to read Thai with Maanii. I just downloaded all the PDF files from your Web. I hope that these books could help me to improve my Thai language as well. I could you tell me another best way to speak, reading, write and listen fluently? Now I am learning Thai language by myself. Anyway I am working at the institute near Thai and Cambodian border. I sometime watch Thai TV but it was more difficult for me to listen the voice when they were talking. Their speed of speaking are so fast. So, would you help me to catch it well and understand the meaning while they are discussing? I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Your sincerely

I just wanted to encourage those of you asking various questions that good things do come in time if you put the effort in. Last October I posted a long response about Maanii books, reading and writing. I’m one year into the project and now able to read and understand most of what is contained in Maanii Book 1. I’m working on writing – learning the correct spelling of common Thai words (vowels, tone marks, etc.). I’m convinced it is the best avenue for speaning Thai which is clearly a challenging language for anyone. Had I done this with Spanish I’m sure I could hold a good conversation with a spanish speaking person, but with Thai that is not possible for most of us. However, Mai’s books are very good. I only wish she had the time and translated the full version of the books into english along with the great work she did on translations. The original books have much needed drills that we all need to practice in order to learn to speak Thai. If you look at the original version you’d see what I mean or for that matter any one of the Grade 1 – 3 kids books on book store shelves in Thailand. They are fabulous tools for learning to speak and pronounce the language. It is how kids learn on Thailand.

Wonderful blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform
like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m totally overwhelmed ..
Any suggestions? Kudos!

I say it must be the fault of the action control district in light of the way that there seems to have been a modification over the latest couple of years with the coordination of the development lights on Davey and Macquarie roads. This together with the panel mollifying the Myer building proprietors of having ways blocked is pulverizing it for everyone. Movement Minister dont make things any less requesting by passing the buck back to the HCC yet then again he is not in the electorate.
