If a person could face great danger and return unscathed, we would think that they could fall in the river and not get swept away by the current, or even fall in a fire and not get burnt. We would consider them to be extremely lucky. This Thai saying carries a different interpretation of this however. If a person has led a very good life and accumulated much positive karma, then misfortune cannot touch or harm them. Their “luck” in these unfortunate circumstances is due to their previous good deeds.

“คนดีตกน้ำไม่ไหลตกไฟไม่ไหม้” เป็นคำที่มีเหตุผลมากถ้าเข้าใจความหมายเชิงอุปาอุปมัยของภาษา โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งสังคมไทยสมัยก่อนนั้นยึดพระพุทธศาสนาเป็นหลักยึดของจิตใจ ถ้าศึกษาดี ๆ จะเห็นว่าหลายคำนั้นล้วนมีความหมามย หรือมีที่มาเพื่อสื่อถึงความเข้าใจทางพุทธศานาอย่างลึกซึ้ง
มาดูคำว่า “ไฟ” ในที่นี้ หมายถึง สิ่งที่ทำให้จิตใจเรารุ่มร้อน ความรู้สึกที่เผาใจเราจนไม่เป็นสุขหรือทำให้เป็นทุกข์นัั่นเอง ได้แก่ ความโลภ ความโกรธ และความหลง ไฟนี้ถ้าใครมีอยู่กับตัวก็จะทุกข์ทรมาน อาการดีดิ้นของใจที่เหมือนคนโดนเผา หรือเหมือนคนบ้า (บ้ายศ สมบัติ ชื่อเสียง งาน ฯลฯ) ส่วน “น้ำ” นั้นเป็นสิ่งที่เย็น ทำให้เพลิดเพลิน หรือ จะเรียนกว่า สิ่งดีงามก็ไม่ผิด แต่ถ้าใครที่เผลอติดสิ่งดี ๆ ที่ตัวเองทำจนเกินไปก็อาจจะเผลอไปทำร้ายจิตใจคนอื่นได้โดยไม่รู้ตัว เพราะเหตุหลงความดีจนยกตัวเองเหนือผู้อื่น
ฉะนั้น คำว่า “คนดี” จึงหมายถึง ผู้ที่รู้เท่าทัน น้ำ และ ไฟ ดังกล่าว เมื่อเขาหรือเธอรู้เท่าทัน น้ำ และ ไฟ ที่ปรากฎอยู่รอบตัวตลอดเวลาด้วยความมีสติ แม้พวหเขาจะเจอเหตุการณ์เลวร้ายใด ๆ ก็ตาม ไม่ว่าจากมนุษย์ด้วยกัน จากภัยธรรมชาติ หรือแม้จะถูกทำร้ายร่างกายอย่างสาหัส แต่เรื่องร้ายเหล่านั้นก็ไม่อาจทำร้ายจิตใจของเขาได้ ใจเขายังคงรู้สึกสงบและร่มเย็นไม่หลงไหลไปตามกระแสน้ำและไฟต่าง ๆ ที่ลูกโชนตามโลกภายนอก…..
