Thai language has verb to be similar to  English. Several different verbs translated to “is/an/are”, “was/were”.There are 4 most important verb to be in Thai language. This episode will be part 1 of a 4  part verb to be series.

 Verb to be number 1 : เป็น/bpen

 

เป็น/bpen means “to be”

It’s always followed by nouns or noun phrases.

Pattern :  เป็น/bpen + nouns or noun phrases

Example

  • เขาเป็นเพื่อน Friend in Thai

kăo bpen pêuan

He is (a) friend.

 

  • ผมเป็นผู้ชายman in Thai

pŏm bpen pôo chaai

I am (a) man.

 

  •  ผมเป็นคนใจดีjai dii

pŏm bpen kon jai dee

I’m (a) good hearted person.


 Negative form of  เป็น/bpen

Unlike in English, it can’t be placed with negative word like ไม่ /mâi/ no , not. The negative form of “is not” is either

1 .ไม่ใช่/mâi châi /is not

OR

2.ไม่ได้เป็น/ mâi dâai bpen/ is not

Example

  • เขาไม่ได้เป็นเพื่อนnot a friend in Thai

kăo mâi dâai bpen pêuan

He is not (a) friend.

 

  • ผมไม่ใช่คนใจดีbad person in Thai

pŏm mâi châi kon jai dee

I an not (a) good hearted person.

 

  • ผมไม่ใช่ผู้ชายladyboy in Thai

pŏm mâi châi pôo chaai

I am not (a) man.


 

The exceptional use of  เป็น/bpen

เป็น/bpen is not used with adjectives as in English

Example of incorrect sentenses

  • ฉันเป็นสวยbeautiful in Thai

chăn bpen sŭay

I am beautiful.

 

  • ผมเป็นหล่อhandsome in Thai

pŏm bpen lòr

I am handsome. 

 

Example of correct sentences 

  • ฉันสวยbeautiful in Thai

chăn  sŭay

I am beautiful.

 

  • ผมหล่อhandsome in Thai

pŏm lòr

I am handsome.
